My April, May, June, July and August favourites!

DSC_2328

I am really going to condense everything I’ve loved in the last 5 months with a burning passion into one post? Yes, yes I am. Cos I can.

And let’s be real, this ain’t gonna be that long cos I have a real short memory nowadays and neither can I pin point exactly which fave is from which month cos I can’t seem to grasp the concept of time lately. Shit, did this really take 5 minutes to type?

My fingers know it’s been awhile since I’ve typed vigorously cos the keys feel real shallow on this laptop. Such a weird feeling.

Anyway on to numero uno;

Empties Galore!

empties Hey guys, so I thought I would round up all my empties and kinda do a quick fire post to get the ole blogging cogs turning again. If you haven’t noticed I have been away for a long while and I really haven’t been in the mood for writing. I know, shock horror. But it’s looking good today and I’m feeling a little it more inspired than usual, so park your ass and enjoy the ride. Continue reading “Empties Galore!”

Maybelline Dream Flawless Nude Review

dreamflawlessfoundation

So this was one of thing things on my wishlist last month and when I saw it in store for £5.99 (it’s introductory price) I just had to get it. Can’t resist a deal.

The Maybelline Dream Flawless Nude is a ‘fluid touch’ foundation, it is essentially beigey coloured water, if you accidentally knock this over it’s gonna ruin your carpet forever so be extra careful handling this motherflower. I’ve never come across this formula before so I’m even more intrigued about it’s claims.

dreamflawlessdropper

What makes this foundation unique also is the applicator, there’s a teardrop shape at the end of the wand and you are supposedly meant to drop a bit of the foundation onto your finger and apply it to your face. I have to say I don’t find that method very efficient for me personally as I’m also super clumsy so to speed things along I swipe and dab the wand on my face directly. It looks crazy and a little weird but it’s what works for me and I then buff the foundation in with my Real Techniques buffing brush (it is amazing and worth having in your brush collection if it’s not there already!)

Because I am such a klutz, the applicator and the way you have to dispense the product it’s not ideal for me. If Maybelline wanted to go with the whole dropper thing I think a pipette would have been a better idea, it would be easier and less risky to manoeuvre the product from bottle to your hand or face you know? But I have to say I do like the design of the wand, it is pretty but perhaps not the most practical.

Peeling, Toning and Preening

peel

So I bought two skincare products that one, I needed and the other I was really curious about and they are the Botanics All Bright Toner from Boots and B. Revealed Glycolic Peel from Superdrug as well as a cheeky treat, the Eyebrow Stylist by Sleek cos why the hell not. I’ve been using the skincare products for a good three weeks now so Imma give you my review on them.

Customer Service

I was just thinking the other day about my favourite brands and why I like them and why I have an unfavourable view of others to a point where I would not buy their products again.

Recently I was in a situation where I discovered that I was mis-sold a make up accessory, before the point of purchase the sales assistant had declared that it came with a lifetime guarantee but a couple of months later I went to revisit the brand’s counter in another city and I enquired about the offer and whether it applied to any of their other accessories. The lady working at that stand looked bemused and told me she had never heard of such a thing nor had her colleague. Right there and then I felt completely duped and embarrassed.

Maybelline Dream Flawless Nude Foundation

1. Make Up Revolution’s Iconic Pro Palette

Oh boy, am I excited for this! It has been dubbed the as the dupe for the Lorac Pro Palette which I have read and seen all over the internet, this thing has been raved about to death which has of course piqued my curiosity, though not enough to warrant international shipping considering it is already a hefty $42 (and the possible customs charges.) That’s a lot of commitment for a product I’m just not ready for. Having seen the swatch comparisons this looks pretty much spot on, it’s available in a store near me and it has a more affordable price point! I’ve never tried any of Make Up Revolution’s eyeshadows before so it’d be very interesting to see if it does deliver.

2. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer

Concealers have slowly become one of my favourite make up items ever, when I first got into make up I didn’t bother with them because I always assume it was like foundation but in a smaller compact packaging. How wrong was I! So I’ve gone through a fair few concealers some which have been meh and some I was rather impressed with and I can’t wait to try this Maybelline one after hearing so many good things about it, I know it’s not a new release by any means and I haven’t actually seen it stocked in the Boots near me so I’m hoping it hasn’t been discontinued…

3. Liquid Powder Foundations

There are actually two that I’m interested in, the one you see in the photo above, the Maybelline Dream Flawless Nude Foundation which comes in what looks like a giant nail polish bottle and the L’oreal’s Nude Magique Eau de Teint, which I did have a quick swipe of on my hand in store, it’s formula is so watery but it dries to a powdery finish and it’s so soft! But I do have reservations about it’s coverage, I don’t think it would be enough for me personally and from what I’ve heard it isn’t really buildable so that’s a bit of a downer, though it is supposed to feel like you have nothing on, maybe when my skin is in better condition I might get it a go.

The Maybelline product is it’s competitor and again I’m really interested in this kind of thin liquid formula, it claims to have a medium to full coverage with an ‘undetectable finish’ which would be amazing if the product lives up to that because I absolute hate feeling like I’m wearing loads of make up.

4. Bourjois Powders

I’ve finally hit pan on my powder so I’m now on the hunt for a new one, I would repurchase the one i had before (L’oreal Nude Magique BB Powder) because it does the job grand, even though the packaging broke on me before it’s completely finished but that’s forgiven cos I have had it for a while now, but I’m in the mood to try something new. I’m not sure whether to go for the Healthy Balance or the Silk Edition powder compact, I do like the look of the Silk Edition though but I am a complete sucker for sleek packaging. Let me know if you’ve tried either, I would love to know what you think of them!

Have you tried any of the products I’ve mentioned? If so what did you think of them? Let me know what’s on your wishlist at the moment too!

My Nudes

Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick Brun Boheme

If you came here expecting naked photos of me than you’re going to be sorely disappointed (maybe), and if you came here expecting nude lipstick welllll you may be a lil let down but hear me out! I was having my usual gander at the aisles in Boots when I came across this little ditty, I was on the hunt for a nudey-beigey colour but I’ve never had much luck with the formula or colour match previously until I found this.

It’s a lot browner in real life (it’s so hard to capture it on camera!) and I would describe the colour of the bullet as a mixture of brown and dusty pink. It’s not a colour I’ve chosen before, I bought it on a whim and luckily I absolutely love it! It’s not your typical ‘nude nude’ but it’s a — do I dare say it? ‘my lips but better’ kinda shade (cringe).

The formula is so soft on your lips, it just glides on and for someone who suffers from chronic dry lip this is perf. It has a satiny/creamy finish and for what I consider a ‘light’ colour it really has some staying power! Even when the buttery sheen is worn off there still some of the original colour left on your lips which I like. It was still on after I had eaten! So that’s a sign of a good lipstick right there.

My “I’m Staying Overnight” Make Up Bag

compactmakeup

I love peaking into people’s make up bags, it’s the nosy neighbour in me that can’t resist a snoop so I thought I’d share what’s in my essential travelling make up bag in return. The things in there are my absolute can’t-do-withouts and it’s what I would say is my ‘everyday’ type of look. The products are carefully selected for not only it’s purpose but weight and size counts here too. No heffers in here mam. The last thing you need when you’re travelling to a friend’s/cousin’s/down low lover’s/boyfriend’s house is extra weight to lug around, nobody has time for that. I’m ashamed to admit that I have all my make up divided up into 3 massive separate bags; face, eyes and lips. I had just realised the sheer amount of stuff I have BUT I can condense it all into a small bag, it’s 19cm x 11cm, if y’all interested.

So, what am I packing?

Discount Discoveries!

poundlandstuff

Last weekend I went to have a leisurely browse with my mother in a local retail park, it’s one of those type of parks that has the most random group of stores bunched together. You could buy a bed, knitting needles and beer in one trip if you wished. Amongst the plethora of shops, I was most drawn to the discount outlets, cos who doesn’t love a bargain? I can’t walk past the reduced section in Asda without having a cheeky gander. I’ve heard that Poundland stocks drugstore make up so I went on a mission to find some goodies, I did manage to find a teeny tiny section dedicated to cosmetics in the store I visited. In true Poundland style everything is jumbled up — not messy necessarily, but there’s no real order to how things are stacked. Maybe it’s just the Monica Geller in me that can’t comprehend their methods.

I didn’t find any make up I really really wanted but I was impressed that they had a real mixed bag of products and brands available including, Rimmel, NY Colour, Bourjois, L’oreal, all individually bagged in these cellophane wrappers. Though I did purchase some more of that cocoa butter vaseline because I love it and I go through those tins faaaar too quickly. Also paying anymore than a pound for it, is criminal, side eye Boots, Superdrug. If you want to find some serious treasure you will need to put aside some time to go through all those little packets and you will probably have a better chance of finding something you want from a bigger store too. The one I went to was a small branch but somehow I still managed to spend a good 20 minutes scouring the display.

How Effective is the SPF in your Make Up?

spfproducts

Recently, I popped into Kiehl’s to have a general look round but what I was really after was the dark spot corrector (you can read my glowing review here) they have and the store assistant launches this pitch at me, saying that the serum was practically useless if I didn’t wear the sunscreen she recommended with it. She did provide good reasoning behind it because scars and dark spots do become darker when exposed to the sun or more specifically UV rays as the tissue is less resistant than normal skin, so if I didn’t protect my skin from sun damage I wouldn’t be giving the serum a chance to work at it’s optimum. Whether for beauty reasons or health reasons we all know how beneficial sunscreen is.

She then disclosed to me that the SPF (sun protection factor) in my foundation and moisturiser is not effective unless I apply 7 to 10 layers of it. Which nobody does, ever. Up until that very moment I never questioned the effectiveness of SPF in my make up or skincare and when I’m looking for a foundation I always prefer to get one with sun protection because that’s a bonus right? But what she said has completely shattered the way I look at those products now and I’m disappointed that none of these products I bought declared how much I need to use to get the SPF stated. It just seems that SPF is only an added extra to boost it’s value and appeal of a product, I feel quite deceived, I mean they’re technically not breaking the rules but they aren’t exactly being honest either. I’m ever skeptical about beauty products’ claims anyway but I thought sun protection wouldn’t be something brands would be sly about.

After that bombshell she really pushed the factor 50 ‘Ultra Light Daily UV Defence’ sunscreen and she was really passionate about that specific product enough to give me a few samples to try as I felt she could sense my hesitance about the sunscreen, as I did question her whether factor 50 was too much and she went on to explain that even though it’s winter and the sun isn’t out they’re still UV rays being emitted and even indoors the sunlight (on the rare occasion there is) can go through windows and can damage your skin that way too. She even went as far to say that dermatologists always recommend a factor 50 sunscreen, which I took with a grain of salt to be honest.

So as soon as I got home I did the nerdy thing and googled fervently to finally get to the bottom of this sun protection dilemma, is it really necessary for me to wear a factor 50 sun screen daily? The short answer would be no, and here’s why. The Met Office has forecasted what the UV index is like for the next 5 days and it’s a great fat 0 (for where I live and I’m sure it’s more of less the same up and down the country) and a score of 0 means no exposure and according to their guide you can ‘safely stay outside’. So I have no worries about my dark spots getting darker, brill and let’s be real why should we waste using up products when they are not going to be actively protecting us?

Of course when the summer does roll around, it means we will have to wear an actual sunscreen underneath our make up for the full factor protection but until then I think I’m good with what I’m using now.

Let me know in the comments if you knew the truth about SPF in our make up and skincare products because it was definitely new news to me and what your thoughts are about that!
